Cycle Safety Programme.

The children from our two fifth classes recently completed the Cycle Safety Programme. A new programme has been devised this year and is being rolled out to a limited number of schools. Our school                          was also selected as the school to promote this initiative at national level. We had a number of visitors to the school recently supporting this promotion. We look forward to the opening of the new cycle path along by the canal which will be a great facililty for our local community to use for walking, running and cycling.

School Bazaar – All items to be brought to school by Tuesday April 4th.

The School Bazaar which is organized by the Sixth Classes with the assistance of their class teachers and Parents Association will take place on Thursday 6th April 2017.  Children are allowed to donate unwanted toys, gifts, books, ornaments etc.  Children should only bring in a few euro on the day.   Older children will assist the children in Junior and Senior Infants and First class to do their shopping.  It is a great day of fun and learning. Last year we added a number of fun events – Board Games, Disco, Fun Computer Time, Colouring Competition, Story time. We hope to run a similar day this year.

There will also be a Cake, bun and goodies sale for the children so parents can drop in items on Thursday morning.

St Patrick’s Day Parade

Congratulations to all the boys and girls who participated. We received the Cup for being the best school in the parade on the day.

School Library

Thank you to all involved with the development of our school library. We had the official opening on Thursday 2nd of March as part of our “Night of Stories”. The money raised from the Readathon and the money made available from the Book Fair is being used to add more books at the moment. Thank you to all families for your generosity in supporting these events. Please continue to encourage your children to develop their reading skills.

Physical Education and Sports Activities

Swimming – Third and Fourth: They are attending lessons at the local hotel at the moment. This helps to keep the cost down as we do not require a bus. The fact that we are able to remain in the locality also means that we do not lose time travelling.

Tennis – Second and Sixth: A local coach will be launching this programme in the coming weeks. We have managed to secure a very reasonable rate again this year.

Basketball – Senior Classes: Our senior classes are participating in the local basketball league which Ms. Flanagan and Ms.O’Dwyer helped to establish last year. They are developing their skills each week.

GAA School Coaching – the First Classes have just completed their six sessions and the Second Classes have now started. Thank you to Brian Williams and the local club, Na Fianna for their assistance.

GAA School Teams – our boys and girls school teams are participating in the Cumann na mBunscoil competitions at the moment. This is the 13th year that we have been involved in these competitions and it is a great opportunity for the children to play on a team and represent the school.

GAA Club Coaching is available at the local GAA pitch and all weather facility. Details were distributed recently in relation to times etc.

Dates for your Diary:

Easter Holidays – Closing on Friday 7th of April and re-opening on Monday 24th of April. Friday 7th is a half day so the arrangements are as follows. Junior and Senior Infants go home at 12.15 and all other classes go home at 12.30. Children from the older classes are not allowed to leave early as this causes organisational difficulties for the school.

First Communion for the children from our Second Classes will take place on Saturday 13th of May in Rathmolyon Church. A photographer will visit the school on Monday 15th of May and children should wear the clothes they wore to the church on that day.

Safety around the school

We ask that all motorists exercise caution at the school. It is a good time of the year to talk to the children about safety when walking or cycling.

During the final term the children will be completing the Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)  programme as part of the SPHE Curriculum. A note is being sent home giving further information.
